Taking a dog or cat from India to Australia

Understand approved-country eligibility, residence, permits and quarantine before paying for a route that may not be available.

Before you start

Do not book India-to-Australia pet transport as if it were a simple direct import. Australia accepts dogs and cats through approved-country pathways; the complete residence and preparation conditions matter.

Check the approved-country route first

DAFF’s guide requires choosing an approved exporting country and meeting that country’s full preparation process. India is not an approved exporting country in the published selector. A connecting flight through an approved country is not the same as qualifying residence there.

The residence requirement is a major planning step

DAFF’s current FAQ says animals originating in non-approved countries may become eligible after continuous residence in an approved Group 1, 2 or 3 country for at least 180 days immediately before export, and only if every other import condition is met. Do not treat this as an automatic approval or a quick airport transit workaround.

Permit, certification and quarantine

Use the DAFF guide for the eventual approved export country and the correct species. Check the import permit requirements, government certification, tests and Australian quarantine arrangements. DAFF warns that some animals are ineligible and some otherwise approved countries do not have the necessary certificate arrangements.

Questions to resolve before paying an agent

Which approved country will the pet live in? Can it legally enter and remain there? Who will care for it, and can that country’s official veterinarian certify the complete history? Ask for documentary answers before paying for a proposed route.

Separate residence and boarding costs, tests, permits, quarantine, transport and handling. Ask what happens if a permit or certificate cannot be issued. A quote is not proof that the route is eligible.

Keep the Indian history for any future return

Retain the original Indian export records and every subsequent official certificate. Read the return-to-India guide before assuming that a future trip back uses the same process as the outward journey.

Because this is a long, multi-stage route, ask DAFF for case-specific clarification if the movement history does not fit a published pathway. Confirm animal welfare and care arrangements for the whole residence period.

Common questions

Can a stopover in Dubai or Singapore make a direct India import eligible?

A transit stop is not the required qualifying residence and preparation. Check the complete DAFF pathway.

Is 180 days the guaranteed total time for the move?

No. It is one condition in the relevant pathway, not a promise of completion, permits or transport availability.
