Taking a dog or cat from India to Great Britain

Plan identification, rabies testing, the Great Britain health certificate, dog tapeworm treatment and an approved arrival route.

Before you start

For India to Great Britain, plan around the rabies blood-test timeline, not just the flight date. England, Scotland and Wales use this pathway; Northern Ireland has separate guidance.

First check the animal and arrival route

Check breed eligibility and an approved pet route before booking. GOV.UK requires microchipping before the rabies vaccination used for travel. The usual non-commercial route also has conditions about ownership and when the owner travels.

The rabies blood-test sequence

India is not in the published listed-country table. For this pathway, GOV.UK requires a blood sample at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination, testing at an approved laboratory, a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml, and a three-month wait from sampling before travel. Keep boosters valid. Read the specific re-entry exception if an eligible pet was tested and documented before leaving Europe.

Use the Great Britain certificate

The Great Britain pet health certificate needs the authorised official veterinary signature, stamp and date. Entry must be within ten days of its issue. Do not assume an ordinary vaccination booklet is this document. Arrange the Indian export steps alongside the destination model.

Dog-specific treatment and the final calendar

GOV.UK specifies a dog tapeworm-treatment window of 24 to 120 hours before arrival where that treatment is required. Ask the vet to enter the treatment in the correct document. A changed arrival time can affect a time-sensitive appointment, so recheck after an itinerary change.

Build a door-to-door plan

Write down the Indian departure airport, any transit airport, approved arrival route and receiving handler. Get written animal acceptance from every operating carrier. Passenger travel dates alone do not prove the animal is booked.

Put copies of the chip record, vaccination evidence, lab result and official certificate in one indexed folder. Keep the arrival contact and onward transport details with it. Check the return-to-India guide before a temporary trip.

Common questions

Does the Great Britain guide cover Northern Ireland?

No. Follow the Northern Ireland authority’s pet-entry guidance for that destination.

Can a successful blood test mean immediate travel?

Not for the ordinary India pathway. The waiting period still matters; check any applicable re-entry exception.
