Flying with a dog or cat within India

Check the operating airline, pet space, fitness records, carrier size and airport handover before booking a domestic flight.

Before you start

A passenger ticket does not reserve a pet space. Ask the operating carrier to accept your particular animal, container and route before treating a flight as confirmed.

Start with the operating carrier

Check the airline operating each leg, not only the name selling the ticket. Ask which transport modes are accepted on that route, the animal’s age/breed eligibility, container specification, reporting time and total charges.

Air India and Akasa publish their own pet policies. Read the current policy and get confirmation; one airline’s allowance does not apply to another.

Air India: a route-specific example

Air India currently describes a cabin limit of 10 kg for the pet plus carrier on eligible flights, with other weight bands handled differently. It lists a soft-carrier size of 17 × 10 × 9 inches and route exclusions. These are Air India conditions, not a national rule for all airlines.

Prepare the papers the airline actually asks for

Air India’s document guide asks for vaccination and rabies evidence, a signed/stamped veterinary fitness certificate, the indemnity form and originals. It describes health certification within seven days before departure, or the applicable destination requirement. Ask the actual carrier which current documents and deadlines apply to your booking.

Before check-in

Measure the animal and the exact carrier you plan to use. Confirm the permitted travel mode before buying a container. Give the pet time to become comfortable with the approved carrier, and ask the vet about individual fitness and care during travel.

Keep the pet-space confirmation, reporting instructions and documents in one folder. Recheck if the aircraft, operating carrier, date or connection changes. Do not give sedatives or other medication on the basis of a blog. Ask the treating vet and follow the carrier’s conditions.

Plan the short journeys too

Arrange suitable transport to the departure point and from the arrival airport. Check accommodation acceptance and any local municipal registration duties if relocating. If international travel follows, use the destination guide: domestic airline paperwork alone is not an international entry certificate.

Common questions

Is pet travel included in my passenger fare?

Do not assume so. Get the separate animal acceptance and charges from the operating carrier.

Does every airline allow a 10 kg pet in the cabin?

No. The example in this guide is an Air India policy for eligible flights, not an industry-wide allowance.

Request a travel callback

Submitting a request does not confirm a booking. Government clearance and carrier acceptance are separate.
