Build the road trip around the animal’s welfare, not only the fastest route. Check fitness, safe transport, overnight acceptance and the destination’s local requirements before departure.
Understand the transport-law baseline
Chapter II of India’s Transport of Animals Rules covers dogs and cats transported by road and other modes. It includes prescribed veterinary fitness certification for consignments and specific transport safeguards. Ask a paid transporter to explain how its service meets the applicable rules; seek authority advice for the exact movement if unsure.

Set up the vehicle safely
For practical restraint, CFIA’s animal-welfare guidance recommends a suitable carrier or an appropriate harness/vehicle restraint, rather than an animal moving freely in the vehicle. Treat this as safety guidance, not a substitute for Indian legal requirements. Discuss an appropriate setup for your individual animal with the vet.

Plan stops and overnight acceptance
Make a list of confirmed stops, suitable accommodation and contacts along the route. Ask the property directly about animal size, permitted areas and any conditions. Carry water, familiar food, cleaning supplies and the animal’s regular care information.
Avoid a route that depends on an unconfirmed overnight stay. Have a backup driver/contact and a plan if the animal cannot continue comfortably. Ask the vet about the animal’s age, health and ability to tolerate the journey.
Questions for a paid pet transporter
Who travels with the animal? Where will it be kept? How are ventilation, supervision, cleaning, stops and handover managed? Ask whether transport is shared with other animals and how each animal is identified.
Get the agreed route, inclusions, receiving contact, emergency arrangements and cancellation terms in writing. A social-media profile or attractive vehicle photograph is not enough to establish the actual service conditions.
Documents and arrival
Carry the relevant fitness/vaccination records, owner contact information and any permissions required for the actual movement. If relocating, check the new city’s municipal process separately.
For an international connection, finish the country-specific requirements and the Indian export process before planning the final drive to the airport. Keep original documents with the person responsible for the handover.
Your document checklist
| Document | Who provides it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant fitness and vaccination evidence | Veterinarian | Check the actual journey and service type. |
| Transport contract and handover details, if using a provider | Transporter / owner | Record supervision, care stops and emergency arrangements. |
| Local permissions or registration, where applicable | Relevant authority | Confirm for the destination and actual movement. |
Common questions
Does a transporter’s booking replace all documents?
No. Ask which veterinary records and applicable permissions are needed for the actual journey.
Does an Anist Pet ID replace a municipal licence?
No. A private pet ID and a government or municipal document serve different purposes.
Want help putting the journey together?
Discuss your route, dates and pet’s needs with Anist.
Request a travel callbackSubmitting a request does not confirm a booking. Government clearance and carrier acceptance are separate.
