Travelling with a dog or cat on Indian Railways

Understand cabin/coupe allocation, separate pet booking and current IRCTC online steps before planning a train journey.

Before you start

IRCTC provides online dog/cat booking after charting, but the passenger accommodation conditions still matter. A First AC ticket alone does not guarantee an exclusive cabin or coupe.

Confirm the passenger accommodation

IRCTC’s published conditions allow an accompanied dog/cat in First AC/First Class when a complete four-berth cabin or two-berth coupe is allotted to one PNR. A request for allocation can be considered by the relevant railway office, but it is not a guaranteed allotment.

Book the animal separately after charting

The IRCTC guidance allows online pet booking for e-tickets and counter tickets after the first chart and before the final chart. Successful booking produces an SMS and an emailed luggage ticket. Keep that document with the passenger PNR; do not assume the passenger reservation includes the animal.

Confirm the origin station’s current procedure

The Ministry of Railways’ station-booking guidance describes presenting the dog to the luggage office at least three hours before departure. Because online pet booking is now available, ask the origin station how current reporting, documents and any checks work for your train. A screenshot of an older traveller’s process is not confirmation.

Build a realistic care plan

Ask about the journey length and practical arrangements for water, feeding and breaks. Check the animal’s fitness with the vet and keep the relevant records accessible. Make a plan for collecting and managing the pet safely at crowded stations.

Do not assume a pet can accompany you in any ordinary passenger class. If the intended accommodation is not allotted, get the railway’s approved alternative before departing; do not board in the hope that the situation will be overlooked.

If the train or allocation changes

Recheck the animal booking if the PNR, train or accommodation changes. Ask the railway about the applicable cancellation terms; IRCTC’s pet freight conditions differ from a passenger fare refund.

For an onward flight or international departure, plan enough room in the itinerary for the separate carrier and government steps. A train luggage ticket is not an AQCS export certificate.
